Her Voice is her Superpower

Posted on October 26, 2020

Krista de Silva is a mesmerizing Canadian opera singer, who lucky for me lives just up the hill (literally). Her 2019 season took her across Canada to star in the title role of Opera de Montreal’s Carmen directed by Charles Biname, which I was so very fortunate to have seen live. She has earned a Licentiate and Master’s degree from the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and has performed many roles across the country including most recently Maddalena in Rigoletto, as well as internationally with Polifonia as Dido in Dido and Aeneas. Let’s hear what she has to say about the power of music and finding your voice.

You started your career as an opera singer later in life. I think there are many of us who take a while to follow our heart or pursue our passion. What were the benefits and detriments if any?

The benefit was that I had the energy to give over to my studies and my voice.  The voice grows overtime and needs to settle.  I really loved to study music and it was really easy to devote my time to it.  The detriment: the business of opera is one that likes to boast how young their singers are. And I was not a “young’n” when I came out with my Masters.

Music therapy is a burgeoning field. Holly Chartrand, a music therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, first trained as a vocalist has this to say: “The favourite part of my job is seeing how big an impact music can have on someone who isn’t feeling well”. Do you agree with her and if so have you had any first-hand experience either personally or by way of helping others?

I totally agree With Holly Chartrand.  Music, even coming through your headphones, ignites something inside and it can change your mood.  I think, especially with an operatic voice, which is so powerful in a live setting, can break through and make its way to your soul!  Frequencies have been known to have a great effect on the body and the mind.

In the wake of Covid, what prompted the idea to organize and host live concerts outdoors, right on your own doorstep? Will you continue with it (crossing our fingers)?

I wanted people who wouldn’t normally go to an opera, to hear the music live, in their face.  There wasn’t a lot or any, live opera being done in Calgary.  We, as musicians, love to make music.  I wanted to fulfill our need for collaboration and music making to my fellow musicians.  I would love to do some more outdoor concerts.  A christmas concert would be great! (Depending on the weather).

What advice would you give young talent in pursuit of a singing career in general, and more specifically as an opera singer?

My advice would be to sing my/your inner child, your heart, who you really are!  It takes a lot these days.  Make sure you find an interest outside of opera.  Tell people what the words mean to you when you are singing.

Who inspires you? Are there any women you feel have made the biggest impact on your career?

I like Joyce di Donato.  Most people who have made an impact are men.  But, as a supporter for me and my singing; it would be my Mother, she has always been there and really loves hearing me sing/shine and supports me in every way.

Heya! I understand this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask.
Does running a well-established website like yours require a large amount of work?
I’m brand new to writing a blog however I do write in my diary everyday.
I’d like to start a blog so I can share my experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or
tips for new aspiring bloggers. Thankyou!

Hi Eva! I am lucky I have help. The site was created and is maintained by DGTL Entrigue. However, I publish the blog through Word Press independently. It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I was terrified to start the blog because I wasn’t sure what to write about, but I think if you just focus on topics, people, places, issues etc. that mean something to you then you will have success with it. Would love to read yours soon! Best of luck:)
